Stephen M. Kohn was featured in the radio documentary, “Blowing the Whistle, Paying the Price.” This documentary is about an old fashioned whistleblower, Felix Smith, a former US Department of Fish & Wildlife biologist. Smith blew the whistle on selenium poisoning at Kesterson National Wildlife Refuge in 1982. Kohn described the early 1980’s as the “Wild West of whistleblowing” as none of the laws that protect today’s whistleblowers existed. Kohn discussed what it takes to be a whistleblower. First, when your boss asks an employee to do something morally questionable, “A whistleblower is a person that steps back and thinks…is there something wrong with this instruction?” Kohn said. Birkenfeld Files Motion Asking for Early Termination of Probation

CNBC reports that UBS Whistleblower Bradley Birkenfeld filed a motion today with the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida asking for his three-year probation to be terminated early, or modified. Major Breakthrough in Worldwide Protection for Whistleblowers Today, as part of the U.N. sponsored International Anti-Corruption Day, the Kohn, Kohn & Colapinto, LLP launched its International Anti-Corruption Campaign which aims to education foreign nationals on how to use the U.S. Whistleblower incentive laws. The cornerstone of this campaign is the report, The Importance of Whistleblower Rewards in Combating International Corruption, issued by the National Whistleblower Center.The Center's report calls on government’s around the world to enact whistleblower laws and to model these laws on the highly successful U.S. programs. The report highlights that since 2011 over 1000 whistleblowers from 82 separate countries have already made confidential disclosures to U.S. authorities under the American anti-corruption whistleblower reward laws. Our Client Received the Largest Whistleblower Reward in World History of $104 Million

Bradley Birkenfeld broke the back of Swiss bank secrecy. He was the first Swiss banker to file a case under the IRS whistleblower law. The results were unprecedented. UBS bank (at the time the largest bank in the world) had to pay a fine of $780 million. They also had to close all known U.S. accounts, and for the first time in history, the bank turned over the names of 4450 U.S. taxpayers for prosecution in the United States. Mr. Birkenfeld obtained the largest ever individual qui tam whistleblower award in history, $104 million.

Dedicated to protecting whistleblowers, the National Whistleblower Center (NWC) was founded in 1988 by three experienced whistleblower-rights attorneys, Stephen M. Kohn, Michael D. Kohn and David K. Colapinto. Mary Jane was selected as the NWC's first Public Interest Law Fellow, and soon became a major leader in the NWC. She currently is the NWC corporate Treasure and serves on its Board of Directors. She founded the whistleblower protection blog, and for years managed many of the NWC's highly successful programs.
