DOJ Brain Drain Hampers Push to Speed Benefits Fraud Lawsuits

In this article, author Daniel Seiden of Bloomberg reports that the Justice Department staffing limitations threaten to undercut a new plan to expedite the assessment of whistleblower claims involving fraud against Medicaid and other government benefit programs.
Kohn, Kohn & Colapinto’s founding partner David Colapinto says that “their [the DOJ’s] changes are well intended, but lack the resources to handle all the whistleblower cases.” Also saying that “Whistleblowers filed almost 1,300 FCA suits last year, DOJ said, which broke a record.” He also says that “the DOJ is facing a perfect storm of an increase in False Claims Act whistleblower complaints while at the same time it is losing experienced attorneys to handle those cases.”
