Busboys and Poets to Host Rules for Whistleblowers Book Event

On Monday, September 18, whistleblower attorney Stephen M. Kohn will discuss his latest book, Rules for Whistleblowers: A Handbook for Doing What’s Right, at the 14th and V location of Busboys and Poets in Washington D.C.
Kohn, who has represented whistleblowers since 1984, is the most published author on whistleblowing. Rules for Whistleblowers, Kohn’s ninth book, lays out the tips and tricks to winning a whistleblower case. Whether you are a potential whistleblower yourself, an attorney representing one, or just an employee looking to learn about your rights, Rules for Whistleblowers will answer your questions about how to safely raise concerns in the workplace and to outside authorities.
“The impact of whistleblowers has been profound, positive, and historic,” said Kohn, founding partner of Kohn, Kohn, & Colapinto LLP (KKC). “Often misunderstood and maligned, we’ll uncover the truth about whistleblowers and their motivations for bringing about positive change.
Rules for Whistleblowers, released June 1, explains how to file anonymous whistleblower cases and qualify for multi-million-dollar rewards. Kohn carefully explains complex rules governing laws including the Dodd-Frank, IRS, and False Claims Acts, as well as detailed strategies for fighting retaliation. He also covers controversial issues such as taping, removing documents, and ignoring nondisclosure agreements through the unforgettable stories of past whistleblowers.
Rules for Whistleblowers has already received editorial praise from Kirkus Reviews and Publisher’s Weekly, deeming it “an essential resource for potential whistleblowers, packed with practical advice.”
Kohn will be joined by Siri Nelson, Executive Director of National Whistleblower Center. Nelson, who formerly served as Associate Attorney and Policy Counsel at KKC, is also an adjunct professor at the Northeastern University School of Law where she teaches a course on whistleblowing alongside Kohn.
“Rules for Whistleblowers is an easy to read essential tool for anyone curious about whistleblowing,” Nelson said. “The sharp writing and interesting stories helps whistleblowing feel more understandable and less scary.”
Kohn is a former student of renowned author and activist Howard Zinn, who wrote the foreword to Kohn’s “American Political Prisoners” and co-founded the National Whistleblower Center.
“From back when he stashed copies of the pentagon papers under his chair as a journalistic professor at Boston University, all the way through being one of the founding directors of the National Whistleblower Center, Howard Zinn has been an advocate for and inspiration to whistleblowers through his entire professional career,” Kohn explained.
The event will begin at 6pm, featuring a live book reading, discussion of Kohn’s 37 “rules,” and a question and answer segment. Copies of the book will be available for purchase before and after the event. All proceeds from Kohn’s book sales go to the National Whistleblower Center.
Busboys and Poets is a restaurant, bar, bookstore and gathering place that looks to be a hub for creatives in the DMV area. Busboys and Poets’ Programs Coordinator, Tamara Collington, explained that “Busboys and Poets is a community where racial and cultural connections are consciously uplifted. A place to take a deliberate pause and feed your mind, body and soul. A space for art, culture and politics to intentionally collide. We believe that by creating such a space we can inspire social change and begin to transform our community and the world.”
