Whistleblower Attorney Explains How to File Freedom of Information Act Requests

FOIA webinar
Published On: December 18th, 2020

Whistleblower attorney Stephen Kohn, partner at Kohn, Kohn & Colapinto (KKC), recently presented a webinar that detailed how to use the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The webinar was hosted by Whistleblower Network News (WNN), an independent online newspaper dedicated to promoting the stories of whistleblowers around the world.

Established in 1966, the Freedom of Information Act provides for citizens to obtain access to federal agency records upon request. FOIA requests are critical for both journalists and whistleblowers.

During the webinar, Kohn gave a step by step overview of the FOIA filing process and included a sample FOIA request to be used if expedited processing is being sought.

“The biggest mistakes people make in FOIA requests are 1. Not understanding how simple it is, and 2. Not understanding the purpose behind it,” Kohn said. “The access to government information is your right. When Congress passed FOIA, it wanted to open access to the government.”
