Proposed IRS Whistleblower Improvements Act Gives Trump Administration Opportunity to Strengthen Program

Yesterday Bloomberg BNA published an article discussing the future of the IRS Whistleblower Office under the Trump administration. “IRS Whistleblower Office Faces Test With Trump Administration,” reviews the current state of the program and new legislation that aims to improve legal protections for IRS whistleblowers who expose tax fraud and evasion.
Dean Zerbe, a partner at Zerbe, Fingeret, Frank and Jadav and a Senior Policy Analyst for the National Whistleblower Center, helped write the tax code amendments that created the IRS Whistleblower Office. In the article, he discusses his concerns with how the office handles claims asserting that it “needs to be better at communicating with whistleblowers.” He also thinks the proposed IRS Whistleblower Improvements Act of 2017 is a chance for the Trump administration to “hit a home run” in the battle against tax fraud by improving the IRS Whistleblower program.
Stephen M. Kohn, a partner at Kohn, Kohn & Colapinto and the executive director of the National Whistleblower Center also added to the discussion about the proposed legislation stating, “This reform provides critical protection for those courageous enough to risk losing their jobs to report illegal tax schemes.”
