KKC Meets with Indonesian Delegation to Discuss Transnational Whistleblower Laws

On October 23, Kohn, Kohn & Colapinto (KKC) founding partner Stephen M. Kohn and Senior Law Clerk Melissa Revuelta met with a delegation from Indonesia to discuss using U.S. transnational whistleblower laws to combat fraud and corruption in Indonesia. This instructional session was organized through the State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). The IVLP connects visiting foreign leaders and anti-corruption professionals to their American counterparts, fostering partnership and strategic information sharing.
Revuelta, in her opening remarks, highlighted the transformative potential of international whistleblowers utilizing major U.S. transnational whistleblower laws, such as the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and the Anti-Money Laundering Act (AML Act). These laws not only allow for anonymous and confidential reporting of fraud but also provide monetary rewards for their disclosures. Kohn then gave an overview of historic anti-corruption cases initiated by international whistleblowers using these laws, underscoring their profound efficiency and potential impact.
Throughout the session, Indonesian leaders asked insightful questions regarding best practices for utilizing U.S. transnational whistleblower laws and the role of the media in the process. Many participants from journalism backgrounds were particularly interested in this aspect, and their engagement underscored the necessity of the session. Despite the powerful scope and impact of U.S. transnational whistleblower laws, their underutilization and lack of awareness in international anti-corruption work were emphasized for all present.
KKC is proud to be a long-time participant in the IVLP. These sessions play an indispensable role in sharing the knowledge and tools needed to protect whistleblowers and honor their role in international anti-corruption work.
