Top whistleblower lawyer Stephen M. Kohn appeared on TRT World News as part of a segment titled “Blowing the Whistle | Bigger Than Five” to discuss whistleblower protections in the United States and across the globe.

TRT World News, the national public broadcaster of Turkey, reaches an international audience and covers U.S. and international news.

Kohn, asked about the difference between U.S. whistleblower protection laws and those outside of the U.S., said: “there is no comparison.” The United States continues to be the only country with advanced whistleblower protections for employees working in the private and public sector.

But, Kohn said, international whistleblowers can use U.S. whistleblower laws transnationally. For reporting crimes such as tax evasion, money laundering, and bribery, “international whistleblowers have received millions in awards.”

Kohn emphasized the importance of the enactment of whistleblower laws across the globe and the need for continued whistleblower protections. Kohn pointed to the success of these laws in the U.S., stating, “Whistleblowers are now the number one source of all fraud detection in the United States.”

The segment ended by looking to the future of whistleblowing and how far the United States has already come. “There is a pathway to expose corruption, bribery, fraud. There is a way to do it that works. And it works remarkably well. The issue will be whether other countries follow those leads.”
